Castles and Historic Gardens Around Amsterdam — Perfect Places for a Secret Proposal

Over the past three years, secret proposals have become a big part of my work — and with 39 “yes” moments captured so far, I’ve started to notice a clear pattern. When couples write to me, the first question is almost always about the location. And from my experience, proposal spots usually fall into four main groups. Each of them has its own character, advantages, and little details worth thinking through.

  • The first one is, of course, Amsterdam itself — its iconic bridges, canals, and quiet corners hidden behind the busy streets.
  • The second group includes nearby highlights like Zaanse Schans or Volendam, places that feel special even if you’ve never been there before.
  • The third option is for couples who crave space and nature: the sea, wide Dutch beaches, long horizons, and unforgettable sunsets.
  • And the fourth — no less meaningful — is historic gardens and castles.

Today, I want to focus on this last group and here are few of my favorite spots.

De Haar Castle — Grandeur, History, and Space to Breathe

De Haar Castle has always been a place of stories. Historically, it hosted important events, elegant gatherings, and celebrations — and even today, it’s a popular wedding location. Secret proposals feel surprisingly natural here. What makes De Haar so special for a proposal is scale. The gardens are vast, and that means privacy. Even on busier days, it’s always possible to find a quiet corner where the moment feels like it belongs only to the two of you.

I often recommend planning not just the proposal itself, but a relaxed walk afterward. The castle grounds easily invite an hour or more of strolling, taking photos, and letting the excitement slowly settle. It’s something I love offering couples — the proposal happens, and then the story continues naturally.

Keukenhof — Quiet, Unexpected, Intimate

Keukenhof is famous for its tulip season, and most people imagine crowds, colors, and busy paths. But outside the bloom, it becomes something entirely different. When I photographed a proposal there recently, it felt almost private. During the entire shoot, there were only a handful of people walking somewhere far in the background — never in the frame, never close enough to interrupt the moment. Without the flowers, the park turns calm, spacious, and unexpectedly intimate.

For couples who value quiet over spectacle, this can be a beautiful choice. And there’s another advantage many don’t realize: Keukenhof is only about ten minutes by car from the sea. It’s very easy to combine a proposal in the gardens with a second part of the shoot at the beach — two completely different moods in one experience.

Official information about Keukenhof can be found here.

Museum Gardens in Amsterdam — Romance Hidden in Plain Sight

When people think of Amsterdam proposals, museums don’t usually come to mind. But some of my favorite secret proposals have happened in museum gardens — especially near the Rijksmuseum. Yes, the museum itself is busy. But the gardens around it are full of quiet corners, small paths, and angles that feel surprisingly secluded. You just need to know where to look — and I do.

What I love about this option is how easily it blends into a walk through the city. After the proposal, you’re already within walking distance of Amsterdam’s canals, bridges, and streets. It’s effortless to turn the moment into a relaxed city stroll, capturing emotions while everything is still fresh and real.

Planning the Proposal Around the Location

Every location shapes the proposal differently, and I always plan with that in mind.

  • At De Haar, the focus is on space and time — allowing the moment to unfold slowly, followed by a longer walk through the gardens.
  • At Keukenhof, it’s about timing and flow, often combining the gardens with a nearby beach for a second chapter.
  • In Amsterdam’s museum gardens, the beauty lies in seamless transitions — from a quiet proposal moment straight into the rhythm of the city.

This is something I guide you through step by step. We talk about where exactly to stand, how I’ll position myself, how we’ll recognize each other without raising suspicion, and how the story can continue naturally after the “yes.”

Let’s Plan Your Proposal Together

There’s no single “perfect” place for a proposal. What matters most is how the location feels to you — and how the moment is planned around that feeling.

If castles, historic gardens, or a combination of locations resonate with you, I’d love to help you shape the experience. And if you’re dreaming of a walk through Amsterdam but don’t know the city well, I can suggest locations that match your pace, your story, and the atmosphere you imagine.
