How to Choose the Right Photoshoot Location in Amsterdam (Based on Your Personality)

Amsterdam is full of beautiful locations.

You can find countless guides recommending famous canals, historic streets, parks, museums, and hidden corners of the city. And while many of those places are genuinely beautiful, I've learned something after years of photographing couples and individuals here:

The best photos rarely happen because of the location alone.

They happen because people feel comfortable in it.

When someone asks me where we should take their photos, my answer is almost never based on what's trending or what appears in travel guides. Instead, I think about the person standing in front of the camera.

What feels natural to them?

What kind of atmosphere helps them relax?

Because the right location isn't just a backdrop. It's part of the experience.

If You Love Quiet Conversations and Slow Walks - Jordaan: Perfect for Candid Couple Photos and Personal Portraits

The Jordaan remains one of my favourite areas for candid photography.

Not because it's famous, but because it feels lived in.

The narrow streets, small bridges, climbing roses, and quiet canals create space to slow down. Couples often forget about the camera here because the neighbourhood naturally invites wandering rather than performing.

If you're the kind of person who enjoys discovering small details and getting lost in conversation, Jordaan might feel like home.

This is often where some of the most natural couple photos in Amsterdam happen.

If Nature Helps You Feel Grounded - Vondelpark: A Relaxed Location for Solo and Couple Sessions

Not everyone feels comfortable surrounded by busy streets.

Some people relax the moment they see trees, water, and open space.

For those clients, I often suggest Vondelpark, Amsterdamse Bos, or one of Amsterdam's quieter green areas.

Nature has a wonderful way of removing pressure. There's less visual noise, fewer curious tourists, and more room to breathe.

For relaxed couple shoots and individual Amsterdam portraits these locations often create a softer atmosphere than the city center.

If You're Dreaming of Classic Amsterdam - Canal Belt: Classic Amsterdam Backdrops for Timeless Photography

Sometimes people travel to Amsterdam for the first time and simply want the city they imagined.

The canals.

The bridges.

The historic architecture.

The crooked houses reflected in the water.

And honestly, that's completely understandable.

The Canal Belt offers some of the most timeless photography locations in Amsterdam. Early mornings are especially beautiful, when the streets are still quiet and the city feels like it's slowly waking up.

If you're looking for romantic couple photos with an unmistakably Amsterdam feel, this area rarely disappoints.

If You're Creative and Love Something Different - NDSM Wharf: Creative Portraits and Alternative Couple Photos

Not everyone connects with traditional Amsterdam.

Some people are drawn to industrial spaces, contemporary architecture, street art, and creative energy.

For those clients, places like NDSM Wharf offer something entirely different.

The atmosphere is more raw, playful, and unexpected.

The photographs often feel less polished and more expressive, which can be perfect for artists, entrepreneurs, creatives, and couples who want something a little less conventional.

Should You Choose One Location or Several?

Many people assume they need to stay in one place for the entire session.

In reality, Amsterdam is one of the best cities for creating a small route instead.

Within a short walk, we can move between canals, side streets, parks, cafés, and hidden corners of the city.

This creates variety without making the session feel rushed.

Some of my favourite galleries come from simply wandering together and allowing the city to unfold naturally.

How I Actually Help Clients Choose

One of the first questions I ask isn't:

"Where would you like your photos?"

It's:

"What do you want your photos to feel like?"

Do you imagine a quiet morning walk together?

A playful adventure through the city?

Something intimate and reflective?

A celebration of this particular chapter of your life?

The answers to those questions tell me far more than a list of locations ever could.

Because beautiful photographs aren't created by famous backgrounds.

They're created when people feel comfortable enough to be themselves.
